How ‘What Color is Your Parachute? is Recreated Yearly, by Dick Bolles

After each rejection, take comfort in the fact that you are one NO closer to YES

Job-hunting is always mysterious. Sometimes mind-bogglingly mysterious. You may never understand why things sometimes work, and sometimes do not.

Job-hunting is all about human nature, and in its essence is most like another human activity that we call dating.

Nothing that happens to us is just senseless and meaningless. In the context of our total life, it will eventually turn out to have meaning.

The Career Interest Game

Career Interests Game

John Holland and I were friends for 25 years , and many years ago in a playful moment I invented a brief, quick hazy overview of his RIASEC system, based on my idea of someone walking into a room where a party was going on, and different groups were gathered in six separate corners of the room. It’s called the ‘Party Exercise’ and it’s in the 2015 What Color Is Your Parachute? and in The What Color Is Your Parachute Workbook, and in another book of mine called The Three Boxes of Life, but it’s not on the Internet.

However there is a version of it online, sans title, sans diagram, but with my original wording, at the University of Missouri site, above. They call it the Career Interest Game, and while it lacks my central graphic, they’ve otherwise done a great job of presenting the exercise in color with career links, etc. It gives you a good “first guess” at your three-letter ‘Holland Code,’ but recommends that you also take the paper version of John Holland’s Self Directed Search test.

The Keirsey Temperament Sorter

Keirsey has a more extensive, but also more complicated, site. It has explanations of Personality Type, and lengthy descriptions of the various temperaments. It has two interactive tests/sorters: the Keirsey Character Sorter , and the Keirsey Temperament Sorter . The site is interactive, and once you’ve answered its questions, it gives its results to you in Myers-Briggs Personality Type language with colored graphs. All to the good. The bad news is: You have to go to several places within the site, before you can find out what it all means, for you.

What Color Is Your Parachute? Job

Back in the 1970s, after losing his job as a pastor, Richard Bolles became very interested in jobs and careers.

He and his friends were all feeling the weight of budget crunches, and Bolles saw that for many of them, finding other work would soon be necessary. With young families to support, going back to school for more training often wasnt an option. A different way forward was needed.

Bolles started doing research on his friends behalf, approaching workforce experts and asking two specific questions:

1. How do you change careers without going back to school?

2. How do you look for work when the traditional methods of resumes and classifieds arent working?

Bolles wrote up his findings and presented them to a group of leaders in his church. The information was so helpful, the church gave him a grant to continue studying and sharing what he learned.

And that is how the book What Color Is Your Parachute? came to be.

Since it was first published decades ago, this book has sold over 10,000,000 copies. It is highly regarded, and revised every year so it can offer helpful, up-to-date advice on all things job hunting.

From a recent reading, here are five key takeaways from the book:

A well-paying and comfortable job is the demand of every working-age person today. A job is necessary to not only earn money but also to become a respectable member of civilised society. However, not everyone is able to land the job of their dreams. Some remain trapped in demanding and tedious jobs for their entire lives, while others get content with working at the age of 40 and retiring.

Whats the difference between these two types of people? Career guidance, thats what. One deeply introspects his or her abilities and personality, while the other does what everyone else is doing and gets a job he doesnt desire but pays well. But its not too late to reflect on your choices and seek career guidance.

Whether youre a youngster trying to figure out what you want to do in life or a grown-up with years of experience trying to chart a new course for your life, career guidance is beneficial for both. The Five Factor Model

Richard Bolles, (Part 1 of 4) “What Color Is Your Parachute?”

A test based on the FFM can be found at either of the urls, above. My only quarrel with the five factors is with the one called “neuroticism.” In modern thought that term has a negative connotation, even though this is not identical with the Freudian term “neurotic”, whereas the other four factors have a positive connotation. Therefore this fifth factor is alternatively called “emotional stability.”

Summing up, in my view, the fundamental defect of Personality Type instruments is that they are great at illuminating the style with which you do any job, but are often misguided at predicting what career that implies. I can tell you from decades of experience: Dream jobs or careers are defined by much more than just ‘Type’ or “style.” I would therefore take all Personality Type career suggestions with a huge grain of salt. But they may stimulate your own ideas, which is a very good thing. For that reason, they’re usually well worth taking.

Religion Is Like A Playpen Or Sandbox

READ FREE What Color Is Your Parachute? online book in english

Every decent marriage counselor knows that there are two arenas in a committed relationship that function essentially as ‘playpens’ or ‘sandboxes’ in which the two partners act out in microcosm, who they most truly are in macrocosm. Those two playpens are “sex” and “finances.”

In the playpen called “sex” there is a wide range of behavior, as people use their sexuality to act out who they are in relationship to others. And so we find sex used for dominance or submission, gentleness or roughness, anger or appreciation, love or hatred. Wide and various is this thing called “sex.”

In the second playpen called “finances” there is likewise a wide range of behavior, as people use their money to act out who they are value-wise. And so we find money used for hoarding or giving, a love of power or a love of helping others, a love of things physical or a love of things spiritual. Wide and various is this thing called “finances.”

Ah, but there is a third playpen in human life, and this is the arena called “religion” or “spirituality” or “faith.” Here too there is a wide range of behaviors, as people use their spirituality to act out who they are in the life of their soul. And so we find:

Wide and various is this thing called religion.

Hence, religion that is viewed as “preaching” by one person is viewed as the secret of life by another.

    I hold the latter view.

You Are Not A Job Beggar

Until reading this book, I had never heard the phase job beggar, but heres what it is: a job beggar is someone who just wants a job, any job, no matter what it is.

Imagine going door-to-door, asking people if theres any work they have anything that they would be willing to pay you to do. Mow the lawn, weed the flower bed, clean the guttersanything. And youll accept whatever pay theyre willing to offer. Thats a job beggar.

There may be times when we feel like job beggars. Maybe were in a job search that has gone on and on, and we just want someone to offer us something.

Over time, we may even take on the mindset of a job beggar, believing we have nothing desirable to offer, that all the power is on the side of employers, and that we should gratefully jump into any work were offered.

Contrast this perspective with that of a person who thinks of themselves as a resource to help the potential employer solve a problem. Theres a world of difference in these two approaches!

We could picture being a plumber who gets a phone call about a burst pipe. Our expertise is desired, and we drive over as soon as we can.

The customer shows us the pipe, and then waits to hear what we think about fixing it and how much it will cost. We offer the service to meet a need and we set the price to be agreed on.

Arent these two instances a world apart? They show the difference between being a job beggar and a resource.
