What Is A Virtual Career Faira First Step In Helping You Find The Opportunity Of Your Dreams
In recent years, virtual events such as career fairs have become increasingly popular, particularly in light of the shift toward remote communication and engagement as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. But with dozens of virtual platforms, hundreds of events, and thousands of employers, it can be hard to figure out exactly where to get started.
Knowing how to properly navigate a virtual career fair is a key first step to helping you secure the opportunity of your dreams. Though they may seem intimidating at first, virtual career fairs offer a unique and rewarding experience to both representatives and attendees.
Attend From A Distraction

In addition to your professional attire, you will also want to plan out where youll be attending the virtual career fair. A quiet location is idealand camera capabilities mean that youll want to ensure your location is distraction free for employers.
Even on a small screen, potential employers can still see plenty of background. Make sure the room youre in is clean, quiet and well lit. Your expertise should be the focal point of the conversation, not a visible pile of laundry or dirty dishes, says Brown.

Easy And Convenient Format
Student job seekers, like most of the rest of the human race, prefer to take the path of least resistance, especially if theyre already juggling classes, work, internships, and possibly even a family. Virtual career fairs hosted on easy to use platforms take the guesswork out of the process. When a virtual career fair platform is so well designed that job seekers need little or no training before joining an event, theyre more likely to be satisfied with the experience and stay engaged in the recruiting process. Location independence is also key for students with busy lives, so mobile accessibility is a must, so they can log in wherever they happen to be. Because they require much less preparation than in-person job fairs, virtual career fairs can also be more flexible in their timing, and employers and universities can even host events multiple times a day or spanning multiple days of the week, which creates more opportunities for busy students to attend.

What Can You Expect At A Virtual Career Fair
Virtual career fairs are just like traditional ones, where employers gather to meet with job seekers and discuss employment opportunities. The only difference here is that its held virtually on an interactive platform.
Virtual career fairs feel similar to online discussion posts. After you log in, you can choose to enter various rooms within the virtual career fair. Each room houses a different employer participating in the career fair. When you enter a room, the employer receives a notification. At that point, a representative from the employer will greet you via a chat function.
Employers in virtual career fairs are very engaging. Theyre there because theyre eager to hire and are looking to engage with potential candidates like yourself, says Jessica Koltz, Rasmussen University Career Service advisor. Once they greet you, theyre looking to receive some engagement from you in return.
Others already in the virtual room may be in the midst of a conversation, and you are welcome to chime in. Otherwise, you can also opt to chat privately with an employer, where you may ask about open positions, details of the organization and your qualifications. Employers may even want to video chat with you to get to know you better face-to-face.
In many ways, virtual career fairs mirror traditional, in-person ones. Now that you know what to expect, study up on the following tips and expert advice to make the most of this exciting opportunity.
New: Green Jobs Initiative
In response to growing demand among students for jobs that support environmental sustainability and the increasing importance of sustainability to business operations, we will highlight companies that are actively hiring for “green” roles at this fair.
Students from UC’s Net Impact chapter will determine the eligibility of interested companies to be designated a “green job employer.” To be considered, indicate your interest when you register for the fair. Learn more about the Green Jobs Initiative.

Pros And Cons Of A Virtual Career Fair:
- A safe and secure option for all attendees, especially during a pandemic when the World Health Organization guidelines prevent mass gatherings.
- Saves recruiters, companies, and prospective employees time and money.
- Because space is essentially unlimited, more people can attend virtual career fairs.
- Connects prospective employers with job seekers who may have been unable to travel to a physical venue, thus widening application pools.
- Vital candidate information and resumes are collected and stored prior to the event, streamlining hiring processes.
- Data analytics can be used to measure the overall success of the event.
- Virtual career fairs never close, so job seekers can visit and connect with recruiters anytime.
- Allows exhibitors to engage with past attendees and tap into existing talent pools with ease.
- No in-person interactions, so recruiters and employers may not be able to get a detailed image of potential employees.
- Job seekers may leave the event feeling like they haven’t connected well enough with prospective employers.
- The immediacy of the event may be lost, especially when there are no corporate gifts/promotional products to take home.
- Demands investment in virtual career platform software, webinar software, applicant tracking systems, etc., and training event staff to use these platforms properly.

Lots Of Potential Reward For A Low Energy Investment

Students who participate in a virtual career fair may not just be looking for their next job. These job seekers are particularly career-minded, and they want to get the most out of their efforts. Virtual career fairs can lead to internships and positions that could springboard an entire career, and students understand this opportunity. For student job seekers, virtual career fairs require much less time investment than in-person fairs, since there is no travel required and no waiting in line at busy booths. Whats more, virtual career fairs may open up opportunities that students cant access any other way, particularly because big national brands may be more likely to participate in a virtual career fair, when they might not attend local in-person recruiting events. Having a chance to connect with a recruiter at a familiar national brand is an attractive element for student job seekers considering which recruiting events to invest their time in.
