New Career Exploration Center For Students Opens Its Doors

The University of WisconsinMadison on Monday hosted a grand opening ceremony for the Career Exploration Center in Ingraham Hall.
The CEC recently moved to the new location to better serve students. The event highlighted the services, workshops and resources the CEC provides to undergraduates, and the career services offered through UWMadison schools and colleges.
The Career Exploration Centers grand opening drew a crowd. Photo:
At the event, Associate Vice Provost and Director of Undergraduate Advising Wren Singer discussed the importance of career services.
In addition, Claire Allen, a recent UWMadison graduate from Neenah, Wisconsin spoke about how she was able to maximize the career advising services on campus to find a job after graduation.
While picking classes for her junior year, Allen realized her future was close, but unclear. And thats where UWs career advising services kicked in to help bring focus to the future. She received an email from one of UWs International Studies advisors suggesting a class for students on how to market themselves and their degree to employers. She signed up and had no regrets.
What a great decision! Throughout the course, I was able to work closely with advisers to prepare a rock-star resume I practiced writing cover letters for real internships, and even practiced interviewing, said Allen.

Resource Spotlight: Career Exploration Center
College is a time of exploration, and that includes major and career options. If your student is undecided, advisors tell us this isnt a disadvantage. In fact, college can be a great time for students to explore interests and learn more about themselves, which will help them make decisions on majors and career paths.
The Career Exploration Center is here to help students during this process. CEC career advisors support students who are undecided about their career and/or academic goals. Any undergraduate student can explore their major and career options through in-person or virtual appointments, drop-in career advising, workshops, career assessments, online resources, and much more.
Students can find upcoming dates for virtual and in-person workshops at the CECs website, which includes workshops like How to Choose a Major and Exploring Careers Regardless of Major. Career advising drop-ins are held every Friday and are a great opportunity to learn about the variety of ways the CEC supports undecided students.
Majors dont always determine a career and your students interests may shift over time, which is why meeting with a CEC career advisor can help provide clarity and direction. They can help answer questions like: How do I know if a major is a good fit for me? How do I choose classes if I am not sure of my major? I have some career ideas, but how do I pick a major to achieve them?
