Abrupt Closure Of Tci College Continues Pattern Of Higher Ed Diversity Loss In Nyc

It doesnt quite measure up to a Disturbance in the Force, but the sudden demise of Technical Career Institutes College right before the start of the new academic year should give pause to all who value the wonderful diversity of educational opportunity New York City has achieved over the past century. TCI, a private, for-profit, vocationally oriented two-year college announced Tuesday that it would close permanently. Currently, enrolled students received first notice that the college might close on July 21st. On August 16th they were assured by the chair of the colleges board that it would be open for the fall semester. Barely three weeks later they face a scramble to find other colleges that will accept their credits for last minute transfer.

One might think that closure of such a school would evoke public concern, and the last time the school almost closed it did. In 1973, shortly after the death of Sarnoff, RCA decided to close what was then the RCA Institutes. There was public protest, a faculty strike, and active intervention by concerned elected officials, including Bella Abzug and Herman Badillo. Under pressure, RCA sold the school to the faculty on favorable terms. The contrast to the public silence this time around couldnt be more striking.

Nylag Seeks Relief For Students In For

Flores v. Technical Career Institutes, Inc.

Technical Career Institutes, Inc. , a defunct for-profit college, shut down and filed bankruptcy in the Fall of 2017. Before it did, TCI faced increasing financial distress. It had stopped paying its employees salaries and benefits and stopped paying its rent. Less than two weeks before it closed, TCI told students that they should register for Fall 2017 classes as soon as possible. Based on this and other statements, many students promptly went to TCIs offices to register for classes and pay tuition and fees. TCIs representatives accepted these payments and provided students with schedules of their classes. After pocketing the students payments for the Fall 2017 semester, however, the school closed and then filed for bankruptcy. Named Plaintiffs David Flores, Jenny Gonzalez, and Armando Pardo are former TCI students who are creditors of TCIs estate, because they paid money to TCI shortly before it closed for Fall 2017 classes that never happened and did not receive a refund. NYLAG brought this case on behalf of them and other students in a similar position

If you are a former TCI student, call our case hotline at , or email us at .
