Uta’s Post Bacc Program

UTA offers an unstructured, informal, undergraduate on-campus Post-Bacc Program for students with any completed bachelor’s degree who are wanting to take undergraduate pre-medical, pre-dental, pre-pharmacy, pre-PA, etc. coursework.

There is no set curriculum or required classes for the program except for courses based on graduate school requirements and recommendations. Is the post bacc program affiliated with any medical schools? Does it have a standing agreement with said medical schools regarding admission of students upon successful completion of the post bacc?

Post bacc pre med linkage programs allow students to apply to affiliated medical schools before completing their post bacc. If admitted, a student matriculates into medical school the same year they finish their post bacc, which saves them a year of applying and interviewing. Some linkage agreements offer post bacc students conditional acceptance as long as students meet eligibility requirements. Other schools allow students who meet minimum requirements to apply through the linkage agreements, but do not offer a guarantee of acceptance.

For example, Columbia has linkage agreements with 15 medical schools, but admission is not guaranteed.

Drexel Pathway to Medical School, on the other hand, offers conditional acceptance into Drexels MD program for students who successfully complete the post bacc.

There are perks to attending post bacc programs with linkage agreements. Doing so could eliminate the need for the glide year , offer a quick response regarding admission, help save money on application fees, and take advantage of post bacc advisors during the application process. Former football coach Joseph Walker is among the professionals changing careers and studying at CU-Boulder as pre-med students.

The University of Colorado Boulders Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Medical Program is finishing its third year with an expected 16 nontraditional students one step closer to applying for medical schools.

The Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Medical Program is designed for career changers who were academically successful as undergraduates earning a minimum 3.3 GPA in a non-science field but have not completed the core science prerequisites needed to apply to medical school. The program also provides students with personalized advising, tutoring and assistance in applying to medical schools through the Committee Letter Process.

Launched in 2011, the program provides an intimate, cohort-style academic experience for groups of 20 or fewer students. Together, the cohort takes courses and labs in biology, chemistry and physics over the course of one intensive year and three semesters: summer, fall and spring.

Joseph Walker, a former football coach, is part of the 2013-2014 cohort, which completed the program last week.

I was a college football coach, so Ive spent a lot of time around orthopedic doctors and surgeons, Walker said. Their ability to bring health and healing to athletes intrigued me. I was inspired and decided to follow my love of helping others by becoming a doctor.
