Difference Between A Licensed Practical Nurse And A Registered Nurse

LPNs and RNs differ in a few ways. The level of responsibility given to practical nurses is different from that of registered nurses. Practical nurses do not typically perform diagnostic testing and medication administration.

A registered nurse must have at least a two-year degree or a three-year diploma, while a practical nurse can start in the field after a year of education. Obtaining your RN credentials while working as an LPN can be a great way to gain valuable experience in the health care industry.

Accreditation For Online Lpn Programs

Accreditation is the process by which colleges and universities and the programs they offer are vetted for quality. Proper accreditation is an important consideration for any LPN program you consider, but its particularly important when considering programs with substantial online components. Its your way of assuring that, regardless of its online presence, the program provides you with the quality education and training you need to practice competently as a professional practical nurse.

There are two basic types of accreditation to look for in your LPN program search. Institutional accreditation considers the colleges or universitys quality when taken as a whole. Institutional accreditation of U.S. postsecondary schools is administered by several national and regional agencies recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. The Higher Learning Commission, for example, is the institutional accrediting agency of several of the programs featured in this guide.

The entry-level licensed practical nursing certificate can be rewarding in itself, but it can also lead to a two-year or four-year nursing degree and a better paying job. For high school graduates and adults seeking a career change, the LPN program is an excellent choice. Schools such as the Akron School of Practical Nursing and North Coast Medical Training Academy in nearby Kent offer affordable tuition and quality programs that students can complete in just 12 months. Surging applications to these programs require applicants to submit applications early and complete the admission requirements as closely as possible. The surge in enrollment in LPN program is a positive sign for the profession. However, candidates should recognize the shift in employment for LPNs from hospitals to long-term care facilities, home health care, and private providers. Hospitals are fast replacing LPNs with registered nurses who are trained to administer acute care, forcing the displaced nurses into long-term care and home health care. As a consequence, new LPN graduates may have to compete with their more experienced counterparts for these jobs. The rising need for healthcare by the senior population may provide sufficient new jobs for both experienced and new LPNs.
