Mayo Clinic and the University of Minnesota Rochester collaborated to create the Mayo Clinic Invest In Success Scholars program. The program aims to increase learning opportunities for students seeking a career in health care, specifically fields in research, technology, public health and health care administration. The program builds upon the Universitys capacity to deliver a talent pipeline that is diverse, equitable and well-prepared in the health science fields that in turn, leads to a lifelong career at Mayo Clinic.

Rialie Fenske, a radiologic tech at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, is one step closer to her dream of becoming a nurse with help from Mayo Clinic’s Career Investment Program. She shares what the program has meant for her.

Rialie Fenske started her career at Mayo Clinic as a certified nursing assistant in 2015, and went on to become a CT technologist. But something kept drawing her back to nursing. Now, with the help of Mayo Clinic’s Career Investment Program, she is one step closer to her dream of becoming a nurse.

The Career Investment Program is designed to help staff build new skills and advance their careers in critical roles that align with organizational needs and advance the 2030 “Bold. Forward.” strategic plan.

In this Q& A, Fenske shares what the Career Investment Program has meant for her.

How did you learn about the Career Investment Program?

FENSKE: I searched around the Mayo intranet to see what was offered for career advancement, and that’s how I found the Career Investment Program.

I was going to apply earlier, but the timing didn’t work out with my personal schedule and having to take my board exams, so I waited a little longer. Finally, while working the night shift, I decided to give it a shot and applied.

Science Of Health Care Delivery Certificate

Starting with the incoming class of 2015, the school formally integrated longitudinal coursework in the Science of Health Care Delivery into the four-year curriculum. This coursework entails a mixture of lectures and practical experiences. Studies of SHCD comprise six major domains: leadership, person-centered care, high value care, health economics and technology, population-centered care, and team-based care. The SHCD curriculum adds a social sciences perspective to the traditional medical school model, aiming to produce physicians aware of and capable of addressing problems in the US health care system.

We are planning for an experience for 2023 but will continue to monitor the pandemic and take guidance from Mayo Clinic. The delivery format will be determined at a later date.

Phoenix And Scottsdale Arizona

MCASOM expanded its four-year medical school class to the Mayo Clinic Arizona campus in 2017. Arizona-based medical students have their preclinical classes in Scottsdale, then complete most of their clerkships at the Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix during years 3 and 4. They may also rotate in pediatrics and related subspecialties through a partnership at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. The offers medical students expanded rotation opportunities in psychiatry. Students may also rotate through the Carl T. Hayden Veterans Affairs Hospital for internal medicine and psychiatry.

Each year, the Arizona campus matriculates 50 M.D. students.

Today, I am pleased to announce a Masters in Management in digital healthcare transformation from DAmore-McKim School of Business at Northeastern University, a top 50 U.S. university, and Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science, ranked the best U.S. hospital. This is the first time a university and industry leader have collaborated to create a degree on Coursera.

The year-long program will prepare those in healthcare, such as nurses, clinicians, and case managers, for leadership roles and help current managers and executives in other industries break into healthcare. There is a dire need for U.S. healthcare workers amid an unprecedented shortage, which is expected to grow to 3.2 million jobs by 2026. Globally, the shortage is projected to be 18 million by 2030.

The program contains live course sessions, which can be watched on-demand to maximize flexibility, and weekly faculty connect sessions with industry-leading Mayo Clinic and Northeastern experts. To help students master the skills needed for career advancement, they will analyze real-world Mayo Clinic case studies, engage in hands-on projects, and receive continual faculty feedback.

Students will learn how to make strategic decisions to meet organizational objectives, introduce innovations to improve system-wide efficiency, and implement digital health tools to enhance the patient experience, from diagnostics to wearable tech.

The Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine , formerly known as Mayo Medical School , is a research-oriented medical school based in Rochester, Minnesota, with additional campuses in Arizona and Florida. MCASOM is a school within the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science , the education division of the Mayo Clinic. It grants the Doctor of Medicine degree, accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and the Liaison Committee on Medical Education .
