As a classroom teacher for many years, working with Arts Partners was fabulous! My students always enjoyed having the artists visit the class for the inspiring and creative activities.

As a principal, Ive encouraged our teachers to utilize these amazing artists as often as possible through our partnership. Weve had many school assemblies every year for various projects, holidays, themes, etc. Teachers often utilize the funding for field trips to places many of our Title 1 students never get to go to without this opportunity.

We also have the 21st Century grant for an incredible after school program in which we utilize MANY of the artists. Our friends at Arts Partners help make learning fun and engaging for students and we are so thankful for this relationship!

Vocational/technical And Continuing Education Schools

Beginning in 1931, and continuing until 2004, the Wichita Public Schools had vocational education programs, both in regular schools and in special vocational/technical and continuing-education schools. These programs primarily served secondary school students, but also served adults returning for further education and training.

In 1931 and 1952, vocational buildings were added onto the south side of Wichita High School East, and along adjacent Grove Street, to provide training in vocational and industrial arts. Between 1952 and 1968, about 600 students enrolled each year in various vocational courses there. In the summer of 1968, the district chose this site to open its Wichita Area Vocational-Technical School “Vocational Technical Center” . This facility, under a separate administration, offered training in 18 different areas of trade and industry, to both students and adults.

From 1965 to 2004, the Wichita Public Schools operated a system of vocational and continuing education which chiefly included:

In 1999, the name of WAVTS changed to Wichita Area Technical College , and the college gained authority to grant college credit, and was empowered to award Associate of Applied Science degrees.

In 2001, an addition was made to the Levy Special Education Center, which included a vocational training center for the developmentally disabled.

Students at this school are making less academic progress from one grade to the next compared to students at other schools in the state.

Low progress with low test scores means students are starting at a low point and are falling even farther behind their peers at other schools in the state.

Just Add Arts Symposium: Strengthening Literacy And Sel

The Just Add Arts Symposium: Strengthening Literacy and Social Emotional Learning Through Arts Integration was a professional development event for teaching artists, teachers and administrators presented by Arts Partners Wichita and Kansas WolfTrap. Symposium sponsors included Wichita State University College of Applied Sciences, Credit Union of America, The National Endowment for the Arts, The Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission, The WolfTrap Foundation for Early Learning Through the Arts, Hyatt Place and The Ulrich Museum. The symposium was funded in part by a grant from the US Department of Education. However, the presenters and content do not necessarily represent the policy of the Department of Education, and you should not assume endorsement by the Federal Government.

Fast Times At Planeview High

Meet the 2020 MEIA Recipients

It was never intended to be permanent. Yet after all these years Planeview still stands. Its still a vibrant community for some of Wichitas most diverse and economically challenged neighborhoods.

The southeast neighborhood was built in the 1940s, one of three Federal Housing Administration projects in Wichita. The others included Beechwood and Hilltop Manor. Beechwood, near Douglas and Webb was cleared in 1955.

The three projects were meant to house nearly 20,000 aircraft workers and their families. They were only meant to last through World War II.

The so-called Miracle City, was the states seventh largest city. It had its own post office, movie theater, grocery stores, and schools.

Including Planeview High School . The schools colors were black and white, the newspaper was called the Aeronaut, the yearbook was named Talespin. The first senior class had 97 students.

So what happened to the Home of the Gremlins?

In June 1955, the federal government sold off the land and Wichita annexed Planeview and its schools. For two years Planeview High School continued to operate until 1957 when Southeast opened.

The last issue of the Talespin stated, Planeview High School: You served a great need in a trying war and post war era. Many students have benefitted from your influence, but even you, Planeview High School, cannot endure under the impact of social progress. Many fond memories of your experience will endure in the students minds forever. Farewell.
