When To Hire A Career Counselor
There’s no need to rush to a career counselor the moment you begin to question your line of work. But if you’ve been stuck in a series of dead-end jobs and have given up on ever breaking that cycle, then it pays to give a professional a call. This especially holds true if you really can’t put your finger on why you’re unhappy at work. A career counselor won’t just look at your resume and recommend your next move based on your skills and experience level. Rather, that person will work with you to pinpoint the source of your dissatisfaction, and help you avoid repeating it at your next job.
Another reason to consider a career counselor is if you’ve been job-searching for quite some time without any luck. Maybe you’ve been applying to the wrong jobs or taking the wrong approach. But if you’ve reached the point where you’re starting to lose hope, a counselor’s help could prove invaluable. And if working with a professional lands you a job sooner rather than later, his or her fee will end up being well worth the cost.

How Much Does It Cost To Hire A Career Coach
Similar to the fees many professionals charge, the cost of hiring a career coach varies depending on their experience and credentials, field of specialty, success rate and the location of their practice. A career coach who is well known and respected in their field, such as a published author, will be able to charge more than a coach that is not considered an expert. Career coaches who are in high demand or work in cutthroat fields may also charge higher rates.
Generally, career coaches charge $75 to $150 per hour. More in-demand career coaching services can run from $250 to $500, occasionally even higher. When youre choosing a career coach, the bargain option may not be the best option. Ask the coach if you can talk to their former clients before you agree to fork over any cash.
Youre Not Moving Up In Your Career
Career coaches arent just there to help you find a new job. Many coaches can help you understand why you arent advancing at your current company. Coaches can administer a 360 review or decode your performance feedback to uncover behaviors you need to adjust for continued career growth.
If you decide you need a career coach, there are five things to consider when choosing the right one for you.

How Do You Become A Certified Career Coach
The best way to become a certified career coach is to start with a thriving career in a competitive industry. Success in your chosen field will help you as a career coach, because you will have the tools job seekers need to achieve success themselves. Many career coaches only do coaching on the side of their successful career. However, if youre ready to retire, becoming a career coach may be an ideal second career path, especially if you enjoy helping others.
If you dont already have success in another career, consider becoming a career counselor instead of a career coach. While most career coaches work independently, career counselors often offer the same services, but are part of larger organizations such as high schools, community colleges, charitable organizations or prison reentry programs. Instead of working with professionals trying to become executives, career counselors assist younger people or those who have fallen on hard times.

Career Coach: Career Counseling Is It Worth It
The Bureau of Labor Statistics recently found that employment for career counselors is expected to grow 19 percent by the year 2020. Yet, despite the increased money being spent on coaching by employers today, not as much is published about the effectiveness of coaching. Is it worth the value? Does it work, and if so, how? What impact does it really have? What do executives really think about it?
Over the years Ive asked executives who have gone through coaching what they think its value might be. Haywood Barney, a technology strategy consultant with IBM, said coaching provided a structure and plan to accomplish what I saw as my future sort of a road map. Bart Ludlow, project manager at Avian Engineering, noted, Coaching accurately identifies a leaders strengths and areas for improvement which are critical for all of us to know in order to be more effective.
One goal of coaches is to push leaders to think through issues for themselves. Often, executives experience the positive spillover of coaching to other parts of their lives. As Doug Riley, vice president of sales at Thomas Somerville Co., said, Coaching helped me fine-tune attributes that improved both my personal and professional life.
But not everyone goes into coaching convinced it will have any impact on them. If those individuals can be turned around to find value in coaching, then we have better evidence that coaching is making a difference.
Reduced customer complaints and internal employee conflict.
