Your Guide To Working In Entertainment
Do you have big Hollywood dreams? This article is part of a series on starting and building entertainment industry careers. Read on.
People start their acting careers later in life for all sorts of reasons, she said. They may get distracted by life challenges. They may be afraid of putting themselves out there. They may be dissuaded to pursue acting by friends.
It seems like such as pie-in-the-sky thing to want to be an actor, Sturges said.
But there are always older characters in commercials, films and television shows and a need for older people to play them.
If you want to switch careers and pursue acting, youll need to invest in the time to practice your craft and identify your brand. Youll also need the tenacity to stick with constant auditioning and the rejection that comes with it. The Times spoke with Sturges and two of her students, White and actor Ross Bridgman, to get their advice on how to start.
Decide To Start Humbly
This means that you should be happy with whatever role you get first. While in some countries you may have to start as a supporting actor or actress depending on your experience, however in other countries you may be just as lucky to land a huge role in the beginning.
However, the key lesson to know here is that you should be ready to start small. However, if something big shows up, then that would be an appendix.
How to start an acting career with no experience is not easy task but with your patience and tenacity youll get what you dreamed of.

Enroll In A Formal Acting Program
While a formal acting education isnt necessary for your career as an actor, many people go this route. A formal education provides professionally developed courses that approach acting as an art form. Its benefits include learning how to use your voice and body to communicate, approaching classical and modern texts, and working with different types of casts. A formal acting program can also offer valuable networking opportunities. There are a range of options to consider, from full-time degrees to flexible night classes.
Go For An Audition Daily
Up until now, you have done everything right, you might start to receive some calls from casting directors or agents. Whatever may be the part, just show up for the audition. Many actors think too much about the part. If it is right for them or not. But let me tell you most of the time they end up not going to the audition.
I say, dont think too much, just go to the audition and do your best. If you dont like the part, you can reject it later but do not skip the audition.
I myself had a routine where I always left the house at 9:00 whether there was an audition or not. And came back only when all offices were closed. This developed a mindset where auditions become my 9-5 job.
Let me tell you when you dont have a job, and you are sitting at home you have plenty of time in your hand to ruin your career. Then doubts creep in. You start to think you are not made for acting.
So ensure you set a routine for Monday to Friday where 9-5 is booked for auditions. If you dont have auditions, use that time to meet agents and for networking. Try to get some leads.
Also how you manage auditions is also important. You dont want to commit to two auditions at the same time. Because you are bound to be late for the one and it will look unprofessional on your part. And the agency might not call for you again in the future.
It is always best to be honest with them. You can politely tell what your situation is and when you are available for an audition.

So often the only things we focus on are craft and how to get work, but a great question to ask yourself is Why? Why do You want to do this? Is it about the work? To tell stories? For the camaraderie you feel in acting classes? The promise of big money? Or to be famous? Everything is a valid answer no judgement here! But if its purely money, honestly, a banker or stockbroker might be a better choice. Reality stars can become famous, and writing is also telling stories. To thine own self be true.

How Much Do Actors Get Paid
This is a difficult question to answer, as actors have no set salary. It depends on many factors, such as the actorâs experience, the productionâs size, and the shootingâs location. Generally speaking. However, actors can expect to earn a few thousand dollars per week for their work on a major Hollywood film.
Where Should Actors Live
In the UK, once youre at a certain level in your career, it doesnt really matter where you live. 90% of auditions are done via self-tapes anyway. So living in London, although it may be nice, may not be worth the incredible cost.
That being said, at the start of your career, it can be hard to get auditions from around the country, and you may have to focus on your local area, so being in an area that has many opportunities may be beneficial.
But here are some of the best places in the UK to live:
Each of these are hubs in their own ways, Cardiff for example is often overlooked, but over the past few years has been growing due to South Wales being very cheap to film in, and has a very promising future. Manchester is home to Media City UK, which in itself is self-explanatory.
Ultimately Id say that you should live where youre happy. The UK isnt as big as other places around the world, so theres no need to move to London, paying extortionate prices, just in case you get an audition there. Its only ever a train journey away. Live where youre happy.

Audition And Develop Skills
After graduating, its time to hit the pavement and start going to auditions. Beyond trying to book jobs, though, it might be smart to take improv classes to develop your skills and network with other actors. Attend workshops, events, and keep honing your craft. The point is to act as much as possible, both to stay in top form and build up a resume.
Actors need to get as much experience as possible to improve their range and land more roles. Unlike other trades, where specialization often outweighs versatility, an actor can benefit a great deal by being able to move from comedy to drama, disappearing into different kinds of characters. Future actors need to create ideas and portray characters in theater
Where You Want To Live
It can be tempting to move to large acting hubs like New York or Los Angeles, but competition is strong in these cities. You may want to start off in a smaller location, where youll be in a much better position to gain experience. Find local commercials and theater productions to perform in. You can also enroll in local acting classes.
