Making An Acting Plan
If youve read either one of our free eBooks on acting, you know how to start an acting career and its actually very easy. But there is a more complicated question waiting just around the corner: How does one become a working actor?
A working actor is someone who goes out on auditions and gets to a film set or on stage on a regular basis. Its someone who can put bread on the table solely from acting jobs. This should be every actors goal. Not becoming a film star, but paying bills with your acting gigs.
Once you decided to start an acting career, its time to open your Word and type out your plan of actions. This will mostly be based on the knowledge of how the acting industry works. Where do you get that knowledge? Reading Acting in London, of course.
Here are a few sample questions you can explore in your acting business plan:
- How well do I understand how the entertainment business works?
- What type of training am I going to do and where? How much will it cost?
- Where do I find my auditions, how do I apply for them, and how much it costs?
- Do I need improvisation and commercial class training to book commercials, or not?
- Whos the best private acting teacher in my area that can coach me for important auditions?
Answer as many of these as you can, and keep it all in writing. If you cant answer some of these questions, that means you need to include this in your plan and make sure that you address this.

Negative Use Of Subtext
The trap that most actors will fall into with the use of subtext is on specific lines. In beat number one, the Woman has a line that reads, I am not in the mood for Italian food. That is a simple line in response to a direct question asked by the Man Do you want Italian food Actors should always play the literal meaning of the line and no more. When the Woman responds, I am not in the mood for Italian food, it is an honest evaluation of her hunger. It should not be interpreted as a loaded, subtextual moment, played for the sake of being dramatic. If you are auditioning for the Woman and you get to the later stages of this audition, you can flavor that line a bit, perhaps, but I urge you to think about objectives first and keep your playing of the scene real and honest. If you played the majority of lines for the subtextual value, there would be no clear, honest relationship developed between the characters.

Working With The Camera
More often than not, you’ll be auditioning in front of a locked-down video camera. Locked-down means that the camera sits on a tripod and doesn’t physically move around. For the sake of keeping things simple, the camera generally sits in the same place, shooting from the same angle all day. Often the camera operator will zoom in or zoom out to simulate camera work that may happen during actual filming, but that’s about it for tricky camera moves. Note that even though you may gather from the storyboard that they’ll be shooting from many angles when the commercial is finally filmed, don’t worry about that here.

Guidelines For Creating Short Or Audition Monologues
There are several attributes that a good short monologue should include. It should generally be two to eight minutes in length. Because of its brevity, your story shouldn’t be too complex or convoluted. I don’t advise spending too much time on exposition in a short monologue, since it tends to drag the piece down and bore your audience. Although narrative short monologues do work, monologues that include strong, immediate dialogue and have an intense, passionate, and exciting story are generally much more effective, especially for auditions where you want to wow them. You should create characters that you know you’re capable of playing and 5 that are within your grasp as a writer. Take into consideration the pressure you’ll be under while auditioning. This is not a time to emotionally stretch. Work on characters that show off your best assets as an actor.

The Difference Between The Initial Call And A Callback
If you’re a newbie or the casting director doesn’t know you, and the part is a nonspeaking role, sometimes, your audition may be a taped interview with the casting director. Longtime Los Angeles casting director Susie Kittleson advises actors to beware of a little chat like this. This isn’t a casual interview it’s actually an audition. While she’s asking questions and getting to know you, she’ll also be checking you out to see if you’ve got the right stuff. Just like at a job interview, you’ll want to be relaxed and show that you have something valuable to bring to the job. If you’ve never gone through one of these mini auditions, you can anticipate the situation by holding mock interviews with a friend or your spouse. Allow them to ask very hard questions about your career and your abilities. Get yourself ready. TIP First-time interviews with casting directors are auditions, too.
