Learn To Give Feedback

How to Change Careers at 30 – Where Do You Start?!

Hopefully you would have learned how to receive feedback gracefully in your 20s. Feedback both positive and constructive is a gift, and in your 30s you should learn to give feedback in a way that the recipient will cherish, not resent it.

Start off with asking the person if they would like your feedback there is nothing more annoying than people giving you their unsolicited opinion. Then use the BIO model, injected with empathy: comment on the Behaviour , the Impact it had, and their Options going forward.

Heres an example of good constructive feedback: Sue, may I share some feedback with you? When you delivered your presentation, you kept looking down at the floor . As a result, you appeared nervous and people started to leave halfway through the presentation . I know it can be difficult to make eye contact with such a large group! I find it useful to look over the heads of people in the audience its a lot less nerve-racking .

Before You Start Over In Your 30s 7 Things You Should Understand

I spoke to a client last week who said that changing career in her 30s felt like a crazy idea. She wanted to move back in to something sheâd only done an internship in a very long time ago. She couldnât see how the last five years in her unrelated job could help this happen. She felt trapped and couldnât work how to make the change happen. She asked me what advice I had for someone changing career in their 30s.

So, I thought Iâd share my advice here. Whilst I donât think the below tips are specific to those in their 30s per se, itâs a helpful place to start.

I personally think that changing careers in your late 20s/30s is the perfect time to do this. Usually, by this time, you have a wealth of life and work experience transferable to a lot of roles, and you perhaps donât yet have too many financial commitments or family responsibilities. You can still be fairly flexible in your career, and follow through on what might be required to change career completely. The longer you leave it, the harder it can become…but, of course, it is by no means impossible, whatever age you are. The sacrifices and compromises are just sometimes a little greater the more financial responsibilities and dependants you have. So, here is my advice in the form of five top tips to help you as you contemplate or start your career change journey:

1. Get in to action before youâre âreadyâ

2. Manage your expectations

3. Step outside your comfort zone

4. Work with a Career Coach

Discover What You Love

Dont stay in your lane. J. Kelly Hoey, a New York City-based career expert and author of Build Your Dream Network recommends taking on new projects that let you expand your skills. Volunteer for assignments at work and look for the white space and come to your boss with ideas for how you can create solutions.

Only when you are exposed to different opportunities, do you fully tap into your talents, and discover not only what you are good at but what you enjoy doing as well, says Hoey. Earlier in your career it is so much easier to aggressively pursue your career curiosity and seek a range of work experiences, so don’t waste the chance.

Leverage The Skills Youve Developed And The Network Youve Gained

Some people think that if they change careers, theyll be wasting the experience and skills theyve gained over the past several years or decades. But this often isnt the case. In many cases, you can leverage and apply your previous experience to a new role, even if it seems very different from your current one.

Many skills are transferable. Your experience working in marketing, developing promotional strategies, could easily apply to a new role as a recruiter, where youll be tasked with pitching roles and promoting positions to qualified candidates, for example.

Moreover, the network youve gained over the years can also help you identify and land roles in new industries. These connections can serve you well in both changing careers and getting up to speed.

Is it time for a career change? Only you can truly answer that question. But the people around you can help you make the transition. As you contemplate a big move, dont be afraid to ask for help and take the time you need to make a thoughtful decision.
