Whats Your Sweet Spot

This is the most practical advice I have when it comes to finding your life purpose, and its one of the most common topics I get asked about on The Ken Coleman Show. Its what I like to call the sweet spot: the place where your talent, passion and mission intersect. The goal is to use what you do best to do work you love to produce results that matter.

Now, every human being has talent. Every human being has passion. But talent and passion on their own are not enough. Were looking for a way to marry the two and unite them with the third factor in discovering your purpose: your mission. Lets talk through each of these elements.

Good Spirits And Bad Spirits

I Feel Trapped in My Job What Should I Do?

St. Ignatius said that the thoughts that occur to us while we are making a decision come from good spirits and bad spirits. He believed that the good spirits come from God and His angels, and the bad spirits come from the evil angel. Both good and bad spirits can cause either spiritual consolation or spiritual desolation, which can bring us closer to or take us further away from God. The key to discernment is to understand where the consolation or desolation is coming from.

For example, if you are generally living a prayerful life that follows Church teachings, and then you experience spiritual desolation, you can bet that desolation does not come from God after all, He doesnt want to sway you from the good life you are living. On the other hand, if you are living a life thats apart from God, and you experience spiritual desolation, thats definitely coming from God.

What Do I Want To Do Every Day

This question will tell you:

  • What careers you should consider
  • How to enjoy getting what you want

This question plays a massive role in our overall happiness, but its often overlooked, if its even considered at all. It can also be a bit vague.

Heres what I mean by it.

Theres a patha journeyto getting what you want. Its not an overnight type of journey either. This path spans your entire life, so you best love whatever it is you have to do to get all the things you want in life.

The path you choose to walk is the process by which you get what you want, i.e. your career/job.

Regardless of the path you chooseno matter how glamorousthere will definitely be struggles and to-dos that you just dont want to do, but that you have to do, in order to get to the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

So a better question might be: What pain can I tolerate in my life? What am I willing to struggle for?

Do you want to have time for family and friends?

Do you want to work a lot or a little?

How do you want to spend your time?

Do you imagine yourself in an office or working from a coffee shop?

If you dont answer this question, youll default to the easiest and most obvious path to get what you want.

For instance, if making a lot of money is important to you, you may study law and become a lawyer. Later in life though, you might have a mid-life crisis, when you realize that you hate all of the work that comes with being a successful lawyer.

God’s Will For Your Career Is The Best

Trusting God in your career means letting go of your old mindset and coming to him anew.

I am still on this journey and so far Ive garnered so much on the way. I have so much to share inclusive of my research and the courses I took on But Ill take it one step at a time. I hope I can share the good and the bad sides with you and you can take one or two things away in your walk with God.

Now this isn’t a call to leave your job! Our stories are unique. For you, it might not be switching careers but something else. I’d been praying about my career and it was something in my heart I’d been trusting God for clarity.

All I’m trying to say is this:

God is interested in every area of our lives. And because we are not like the world, our first priority for having a job must not be money driven, opportunity driven but Christ-driven.

And because our obedience translates to worship, it means we must be eager to let Him lead us.

God might be asking you to take a leap and you’re scared of the risk involved. You are scared your life will amount to nothing if you keep obeying God.

You’ve grown so familiar with your accolades you’re unwilling to let them go.

They are your adornments/fig leaves that cover your nakedness. You feel reluctant and unwilling to give it up because the old feels safe. You look around you and everything is contrary to what God is demanding from you.

The road has definitely not been smooth, but I’m here for the adventure.

Mission: The Results That Matter

Pin on Bible Verses

The third ingredient to a meaningful calling is determining your mission: The results of your work that matter most to you. This one can be a little harder to grasp, so think through these questions to help wrap your brain around mission:

  • Who do you want to help?
  • What problem do you want to fix?
  • Whats the result of your work that makes your heart feel full?
  • Think back on a time when you made a difference in someones life. What were you doing? How did it make you feel?

Then, think about roles and career fields where you could use your talent, passion and mission all togetherthats your sweet spot. That kind of work is what we want to aim for as we continue this discovery process!

What Types Of People Do I Enjoy Most

Answer this question to determine the types of people you might work best with as well as those you want to avoid working with. Make a list of people you have spent significant time with, including friends, classmates, teachers, coworkers, coaches and managers. Identify the ones who motivate you most and why. Similarly, identify people who irritate or upset you and the specific traits or habits that bother you. Look for careers and company cultures that attract the personality types you want to surround yourself with.

Discern Your Spiritual Gifts

I Don’t Know How To Choose A Career

A fifth practical way to determine Gods will for your career is to discern your spiritual gifts. By discerning spiritual gifts, it will be easier to determine Gods will for your career. When you know what your spiritual gifts are, you will better be able to know how you can serve God in your career.

The Holy Spirit gifts all believers with at least one spiritual gift. The spiritual gifts include serving, teaching, giving, encouragement, discernment, leadership, mercy, words of wisdom, words of knowledge, healing, faith, and the gift of helps, to name a few . We can discern our spiritual gifts by praying to God to reveal them to us and volunteering within the church to see which gifts we have been given.

God also gave us natural gifts. For some, this looks like painting, writing poetry, or playing a musical instrument. Others might find mathematics, chemistry, and engineering fields come with both ease and enjoyment.

When you have discerned your spiritual gifts, you can determine which career God is more likely to lead you into because He has blessed you with the spiritual gifts to do the job successfully. Perhaps God will even blend your spiritual and natural gifts for your career field. But remember, spiritual gifts can take some time to be discovered, yet the more involved you are with your church, prayer, and Bible reading, the better you will become at discerning your spiritual gifts.

Encouragement For The Stressed Job Hunter

Here are 12 of my favorite verses, along with my commentary about each one, to help encourage your heart and nurture your spiritual well being while job hunting or anytime youre uncertain about your future.

Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the plans that I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope.

Gods plans for you, for me, are good. It doesnt always feel like that, especially when were job hunting, but its true. It can be helpful to write this verse on an index card or two, and place it in visible places, and recite it to yourself when the worry mounts up. It is always important that we renew our minds and are careful to believe truth, but especially when were in a period of great stress, like job hunting.

Romans 8:28

And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.

In the same vein as the verse above, trusting that God is working everything together for your good, smooths the edges of the job hunt. Our responsibility is to walk with Him, seek Him, love Him, trust His purposes. It is often helpful to focus that you will be able to help others go through similar things once youre on the other side and you will be!

Psalm 27:13, 14

Isaiah 40:28-31

Philippians 4:6-7

Galatians 6:9

Romans 15:4

Make A Life Inventory

Look back over your life and write down the things you used to do for the sheer pleasure of doing. If you are like me, you may find that there are many different types of activities that brought you satisfaction. It may actually be hard to see one activity that pops up over and over. But as you look at your list of enjoyable things, you might find a common thread that will help you see the types of activities you enjoy.

Spend some time in prayer asking God to help you call to mind those activities. Those moments of satisfaction may have been during previous work experience or it may have been when you were in school. Think about your time from elementary all the way through the time you finished formal education and write down all the great activities that seemed to inspire your life and you wished you could continue doing forever. Maybe your inspiration came during time away from school. Time with friends on the weekend or cooking dinner for your family. Write down those pleasurable times and activities.

When you start to see a pattern of satisfaction it will help you see that God has given you a personality that is satisfied by certain activities. In fact, when you see the things that bring the greatest joy to you, it might surprise you to discover that not everyone enjoys those things. That is because God made each one of us different and that He has a purpose for your life that is different than His plan for others.
