How Do You Know What Your Career Goals Are
It’s the million dollar question, isn’t it? Many of us hope to know what our career goals are as soon as we graduate college but, as we try out certain roles and uncover our professional strengths and weaknesses, these goals likely change over time.
To get some insight here, I spoke with Nicole Palidwor, a certified career coach and resumé specialist at Ama La Vida.
Palidwor told me she typically urges her clients to focus on the following five areas when considering a career change:
- Values: What do I care about? What is important to me?
- Interests: What topics do I find fascinating or intriguing?
- Work Environment: What industry and/or company type interests me?
- Status: What is my desired professional recognition and achievement?
- Compensation: What is my long-term desired income?
Palidwor says, “Different priorities will lead you down different paths. For example, if interests rank highest, you’ll look for careers that allow you to explore your passions or reflect your training. If overall compensation is your motivator, you’ll pursue titles and qualifications that move the salary needle.”
She adds, “It’s also important to recognize potential tradeoffs. High compensation doesn’t necessarily align with working for social causes. Ideal work environments may not always provide the status you’re looking for. Non-profit work, tech startups, Fortune 500s, engineering firms, and executive opportunities all await you, but they may not all make sense.”
Align Your Answers With Your Experience
Avoid answering the long-term goal question with aspirations like “become the CEO of a Fortune 500 company” or “win the Nobel prize.” Keep your answers in tune with your skills, work history, and abilities. You don’t want to appear egotistical or unreasonable.
Think about the logical next steps for your career. If you were an entry-level candidate two years ago, maybe you’re interested in becoming a team leader or a middle manager. Alternatively, perhaps your short-term and long-term goals relate to skill-building or portfolio-developing.
Tips For Job Interview Success
Employers also want to gauge whether you will be committed to the role and the company. A hiring process can be a lengthy one, so recruiters want to make sure that a new hire isnt going to leave after a month or two. Its worth noting that employers dont expect you to stick around for the rest of your life this isnt a marriage proposal, after all but they are expecting some kind of commitment to the company, perhaps two to three years depending on your work experience.
Create An Employee Incentive Program
To make your employees work hard for your business with full dedication you must incorporate an employee incentive program. The incentive program may include both tangible and intangible perks . Even a small appreciation helps in motivating your employees.

Tasks cannot be done by themselves. Just like employees cannot wish to be rich before they go to bed and expect to wake up in a mansion. Short- and long-term professional goals are essential regardless of business schedule or life plan.
Setting long-term and short-term goals depends on what is most important and what can benefit the growth of the professional team or individual.

Structure Your Answer To Fit The Organization And Job
Employers prefer to hire employees who want to grow with their company. For your answer to be successful, it needs to be not only honest to your personal career goals but also relevant to the job you’re interviewing for. In other words, your goals should fit the needs of the organization.
To determine what the company is looking for, visit its website and search for a description of its company goals, vision or mission statement. This information can provide you with clarity and help you better craft a relevant response. It also demonstrates that you’ve researched the company and have a genuine interest in working for them. For a company whose mission is to stand out among its competitors, here are some example answers you can use:
“I’d like to become an active contributor to helping my employer become the best in the industry.”
“My goal is to use my creative talents to curate fresh ideas unseen at other companies.”
Similarly, the job alone must align with the short-term goals you’ve set for yourself. For example, if you’re interviewing for an entry-level position, your goals need to reflect this rather than saying you want to get a leadership role within the next year.
