Arts Media & Entertainment

The Arts, Media, & Entertainment pathway is similar to the national Arts, A/V Technology, & Communications cluster. However, the California pathway only has four subsections:

  • Design, Visual, & Media Arts
  • Production & Managerial Arts
  • Game Design & Integration
  • Each subsection has a number of courses that are put into three buckets: introduction, concentration, and capstone.

    In addition, depending on the occupation a student desires within the AME pathway, they will need to go on and earn a certification or degree.

    Unlike the ANR pathway, there is no CTSO for students interested in arts, media, and entertainment.

    Why Is California Good For Vocational/technical Schools

    California works hard to ensure that workers in its Career Technical Education programs have the tools they need to succeed. Since 2013, the state has invested more than $1 billion in regional career pathways through various initiatives. Student outcomes have been strong, with close to 80 percent of the roughly 900,000 CTE college students finding jobs or enrolling in further training within six months of graduation. Also, as recently as 2018, California legislators made budget available for a California Community Colleges project called the Online Education Initiative, which is meant to increase availability of career-oriented distance education programs in the state’s community colleges.

    There’s a gap between the number of available jobs and the workers needed to fill them, despite how many vocational and technical schools there are in California. The Golden State’s economy is made up of around 50 percent middle-skill jobs — positions that require some formal college-level training but don’t require a bachelor’s degree — for which less than 40 percent of the state’s workforce has the necessary qualifications. New initiatives, such as California’s first fully online community college, Calbright College, open to students starting in October 2019, could help this issue.

    Riverside County Office Of Education

    The Riverside County Office of Education Career Technical Education Unit provides, promotes, and coordinates instructional and program supports throughout Riverside County to ensure RCOE’s pledge that all students will be prepared for college, and the workforce.

    The CTE Unit, in coordination with Riverside County school districts, provides CTE courses in 15 industry sectors and 58 career pathways. The Unit also partners with local businesses to offer work-based learning to students in more than 1,200 places of employment, and training for teachers rooted on current and project labor department demands. All CTE programs integrate core academic best practices with technical and occupational instruction in order to increase student achievement, graduation rates, and postsecondary and/or workforce readiness.

    CTE courses are sequenced in high schools to create pathways for students in a course of study designed to map to employment and/or post-secondary education opportunities. To best support high schools, the Unit continually develops CTE curricula that meets A-G subject requirements for the benefit of all students. Further, articulation agreements are established between the Unit and local universities so that students receive college credit for successfully completing high school CTE courses.

    The systemic emphasis on college readiness had an obvious dark side: only a third of students go on to earn a college degree. What about the rest? What was the education systems vision for successful career readiness independent of college readiness? The legislature handed the question to the California State Board of Education , which in 2005 adopted a comprehensive set of model curriculum standards designed for grades 7-12. It was a huge undertaking. The standards specified general knowledge and specific career-related skills necessary to achieve learning goals in 58 career pathways in 15 industry sectors.

    These standards were updated in 2013, the same year that California and most other states adopted the Common Core State Standards. As explained in Lesson 6.1, these standards aimed to define the skills necessary to be ready for success in both college and career.

    In 2016, Education Trust-West examined the role of career-oriented courses in students’ “pathways” after high school. In a study titled Meandering toward Graduation: Transcript Outcomes of High School Graduates, the authors documented extensive mismatches between the courses students take and the courses they ought to take in order to be ready for college or career.

    Did these career pathways actually work, or were they just a fancy way of lowering expectations and avoiding real equity in education access? Researchers pounced on the question.

    If you have occupational work experience or have completed occupational courses at a community college and are seeking a bachelors degree, this degree path is designed for you. Students typically transfer a block of relevant, qualified courses from two-year colleges and/or combine with occupational experience credit.

    If you are already CTE-certified in Arizona, this degree will prepare you to meet the highly qualified standard or for salary advancement. This degree is also a good fit if you have career goals outside of public schoolsin business, industry, trade schools, or training settings.

    California Career Technical Education

    The California Department of Education has a large focus on CTE programs. The ultimate goal of CTE programs in California is to have a strong, capable workforce that continues to build upon itself.

    We seek the day when every enterprise in California — public and private — has access to a pool of talent that both attracts the worlds leading business and hastens the development and success of new ones, creating opportunities for all.

    To meet this goal, each pathway in California has dedicated CTE model curriculum standards that ensure students across the state all learn the same information, no matter where they go to school.

    In addition to the pathway-specific standards, all CTE programs must meet Californias Standards for Career Ready Practice.

    These standards describe the fundamental knowledge and skills that a career-ready student needs in order to prepare for transition to postsecondary education, career training, or the workforce.

    To help teachers and administrators hit these goals and prepare students for the workforce, the CDE provides a number of resources.

    In addition, students interested in CTE programs have opportunities to join a career technical student organization.

    Overall, with clear standards and an abundance of resources, its clear that CTE is in full force in California!

  • Environmental Resources
  • Like the Building & Construction Trades pathway, this one falls under the larger ITE program.

    What Are The California Cte Career Pathways

    In the United States, career technical education is found in every state and most school districts.

    On the national level, CTE is made up of 16 career pathways that each state uses as a foundation for its own CTE programs. From that foundation, each state tweaks those pathways to fit the needs of their workforce — sometimes adding, changing, or removing certain pathways.

    In California, CTE is made up of 15 career pathways:

  • Agriculture and Natural Resources
  • Education, Child Development, & Family Services
  • Energy, Environment, & Utilities
  • Public Services
  • On this page, well discuss the details of each career pathway to see how California approaches CTE compared to the rest of the country.

    Well also give some insight into the next big thing for CTE in California.

    But first, lets take a look at how CTE works in California.

    Mdrc Study To Examine Noncredit Cte Programs

    Career Technical Education (CTE) â Career Technical Education ...

    MDRC is launching a new study, the VCCS Noncredit CTE Study, in partnership with the University of California, Irvine, the Virginia Community College System , and the University of Virginia, that is designed to answer these questions. The study, funded by the U.S. Department of Educations Institute of Education Sciences, will systematically explore noncredit CTE programs across the 23 VCCS campuses to better understand student outcomes, including academic progression, program completion, credential attainment, and employment and earnings. Most of the noncredit CTE programs at VCCS consist of only one course that runs from 6 to 12 weeks and includes a mix of lectures and hands-on skill demonstrations. Each course leads to a credential, and credentials can be stacked over time. Although hundreds of CTE programs have been offered at the participating campuses, nearly three quarters of enrollments have come from ten programs in five occupational fields: health care , welding and manufacturing , logistics and transportation , information technology , and skilled trades .

    The VCCS Noncredit CTE Study launched in August 2022 and will continue for three years. The research reported here is being undertaken by the University of California, Irvine and MDRC, and is supported by the Institute of Education Sciences at the U.S. Department of Education, through Grant R305A220224 to UCI.

    West Coast Ultrasound Institute

    The City Year Service Experience

    Brittany White : Shan, youre a City Year alum twice over. Tell us about your experience as an AmeriCorps member serving with City Year Los Angeles and, later, City Year San Antonio.

    Shan Shyrier : After I graduated from UNC Chapel Hill with a degree in psychology, I joined City Year Los Angeles, serving at a school called Santee Education Complex in South LA. We were the first team to serve in that school, and I worked with high school students in English and geometry.

    I was always interested in the education sector. But I wasnt sure if I wanted to be a teacher or not. My service year allowed me better to understand the education landscape and the systemic challenges students and teachers face. I loved it, and I always tell people that it was one of the most pivotal years of my career!

    Following my first corps year, I served as a team leader with City Year San Antonio during the 2014-2015 school year at Martin Luther King Jr. Academy, where I led a group of eight corps members. This was also another foundational year in my career because I had an opportunity to work closely with school administration and support students and educators in a whole-school capacity. I was also able to have a more hands-on role in setting goals for our team and tracking student and corps member progress.

    From City Year To A Career In Tech

    BW: How did you make the transition from City Year to Meta?

    SS: I had been with City Year since I graduated from college. So, I always knew one day I would want to look for things outside of City Year to broaden my portfolio of work. At the time, I was not looking for another job. But a Meta recruiter contacted me on LinkedIn to interview for a position on the Education Modernization Team, which focuses on working with underrepresented communities and increasing access to STEM programming.

    After interviewing and speaking with the team, it seemed to align well with the work that we were doing at City Year. Even though the team is housed in a for-profit corporate company, the work seemed very much like nonprofit work. The goal is simply to increase access to computer science programming for systemically underrepresented students and communities. And I thought that was just so amazing!

    So, after getting hired, I relocated from Boston to California. By taking on the new position at Meta, I was able to double my salary.

    BW: Tell us more about your role at Meta. What are some of the programs and initiatives you work on?

    Getting our marketing team off the ground took about six months. These days, I focus less on creating content for our program web pages and social media and more on vision and strategy. I lead our effort to build brand awareness and credibility for our programs.

    Integrity College Of Health

    Inside California Education: Career Pathways

    The main aim of Integrity College of Health is to promote nursing career and in the community by providing quality education to people interested in this vocation.

    Enrollment: In order to apply for Integrity College of Health, all applicants are required to meet certain requirements and complete documentation.

    Firstly, you are asked to fill out an application form, take and pass the schools test and complete an oral interview with the admission representative of the school.

    Furthermore, the applicant must be at least 18 years old, a high school graduate or GED equivalent.

    The applicant must get any foreign transcripts formally evaluated and results must be on file.

    Plus, the applicant must have CLEAR with Background checks.

    Admissions Representatives are there to guide you through the full enrollment process.

    Fees: The biggest concern when entering a new school is whether it is expensive or not.
