How to Find Grants for Individuals (Tutorial and Links)

The new Career Development Fund for Staff will receive $200,000 in annual funding from the Office of the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer with an initial commitment of five years. The fund is administered by University Human Resources in partnership with the Voices of the Staff program.

Awards Announced

May 2023 graduates must complete their projects and submit for reimbursement by Aug. 31, 2023. Continuing students must complete projects by December 2023. Reimbursement must be requested within two months of project completion for all students.

Grant awards range from $300 to $1000. Funding can only be used for the project outlined in the grant application. In the case where acceptance into a particular festival/internship is uncertain, applicants may propose more than one project, but each must be fully described, as outlined in the application instructions below. One award per student per academic year is allowed. This is a reimbursement grant.

  • How To Improve Your Application

    • Within the application, provide a well-composed and compelling argument for the significance of your travel and how it relates to success in your graduate program of study. All descriptions should be understandable to an interdisciplinary audience of graduate students.
    • Demonstrate outstanding current or past service to GPSA, the university, and your field.
    • Submit a complete and realistic budget including cost-saving measures.
    • Ensure that no information is missing from your application.
    • In addition, funding priority may be given to applicants who have not been awarded funds in the past.
    • Make sure to describe your ROLE in the event not just the EVENT.
    • Please note that this is a highly selective grant competition. Correctly completing an application does not ensure funding. Each month, many excellent applications are not selected for the grant because of the large number of requests submitted and the limited availability of funds. We encourage you to submit your application at least three months prior to your travel date. Some months are less competitive than others.
    • If you are not selected for a Career Development Grant, you may request feedback on your application and reapply if the final deadline has not passed for your trip. Remember, applications are due by the 1st of the month TWO months prior to the month of departure.

    What You Need To Know:

    • Most funding decisions are made by a jury of artists and arts professionals selected from the community
    • In any given program, funding is awarded to applications that show the highest artistic excellence and meet all relevant assessment criteria, as compared to other applications

    Career Development Grants Application Instructions: AAUW

    This Announcement solicits applications to establish and operate a Workforce System Technical Assistance Collaborative over a 3-year period of performance from an anticipated start date of February 2022. The Workforce System TA Collaborative is an entity or consortium of partners that, in close coordination with the U.S. Department of Labor , will plan, develop and deliver TA to the public workforce system, considered here as primarily Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act Title I and Wagner-Peyser Act Employment Service grantees and required partners of the one stop delivery system, where TA to a broader range of partners improves WIOA Title I and Wagner-Peyser Act service delivery. The Collaborative will respond to the needs identified by the WIOA Title I and Wagner-Peyser Act grantees and plan and deliver a comprehensive approach to TA, in consultation with DOL, aimed at improving the quality of employment and training services provided to the nations job seekers and employers. To further the goal of improving public workforce services, the Collaborative will assist grantees in complying with federal requirements and in achieving equity in service delivery and outcomes for people of color and historically marginalized populations, including individuals with disabilities.     The Early Stage Investigators Using Nonhuman Primate Research Models K01 provides early-stage investigators with support and protected time for intensive, research-focused career development program activities under the guidance of an experienced mentorship team with expertise in both the preclinical application of nonhuman primate models and in translation of the results from such studies to clinical application. The focus of this program is to increase the number of highly skilled scientists using NHP models to address complex translational biomedical research designed to foster translation of outcomes into the clinic. The expectation is that through this sustained period of research career development and training, awardees will launch independent research careers and become competitive for new research project grant funding.     Apprenticeship Building America Grant Program

    The HIV/AIDS Scholars K01 provides early-stage investigators with three years of mentored career development to prepare for independent research careers using nonhuman primates as preclinical models for HIV/AIDS. The high cost and time required to perform NHP studies make it challenging for junior investigators to transition to independent positions. HIV/AIDS Scholars receive salary and research support and guidance from an experienced mentorship team, with expertise in both the pre-clinical application of NHP HIV/AIDS models and in translation of the results from such studies to clinical application in humans. By enhancing critical aspects of career development such as grantsmanship, networking, and the ability to translate results from animals to the clinic, awardees prepare to launch independent research careers and become competitive for new research project grant funding .     How Do We Assess Your Application

    We assess your application against the eligibility criteria and then against the assessment criteria. Only eligible applications will proceed to the assessment stage.

    The amount of detail and supporting evidence you provide in your application should be relative to the project size, complexity and grant amount requested. You should define, quantify and provide evidence to support your answers. The sample application form displays character limits.

    We will establish a committee of Australian Government departmental representatives to assess applications. The committee may seek advice from independent technical experts.

    The committee will assess your application against the assessment criteria and compare it to other eligible applications before recommending which projects to fund. The Executive Director of the National Careers Institute will make the final decision.

    Criteria For Selection And Application Review

    Understanding NIH Career Development “K” Awards

    The panel meets once a year to review applications for funding. Awards are based on the criteria outlined here. The panels recommendations are subject to final approval by AAUW. Grants are awarded on a competitive basis according to funds available in a given fiscal year.

    To ensure a fair review process, AAUW does not comment on the deliberations of the awards panels. AAUW does not provide evaluations of applications. No provisions exist for reconsideration of grant proposals. Applications and supporting documents become the sole property of AAUW and will not be returned or held for another year.

    The following criteria apply to the selection of Career Development Grants:

    • Demonstrated commitment to education and equity for women and girls.
    • Reason for seeking higher education or technical training.
    • Degree to which study plan is consistent with career objectives.
    • Potential for success in chosen field.
    • Documentation of opportunities in chosen field.
    • Feasibility of study plans and proposed time schedule.
    • Validity of proposed budget and budget narrative, including sufficient outside support.Quality of written proposal.
    • Applicant is from an underrepresented racial/ethnic background.
    • Applicant will be in an underrepresented area of the country and/or type of university other than a top-level research institution during the award year.
    • Applicant is seeking credentials in a nontraditional field.
