Digital Design & Media
Digital Design and Media Production will allow students to demonstrate creative thinking, develop innovative strategies, and use communication tools in order to work effectively with others as well as independently. Students will gather information electronically, which will allow for problem solving and making informed decisions regarding media projects. Students will learn digital citizenship by researching current laws and regulations and by practicing integrity and respect. Students will demonstrate a thorough understanding of digital design principles that is transferable to other disciplines. The six strands include creativity and innovation communication and collaboration research and information fluency critical thinking problem solving, and decision making digital citizenship and technology operations and concepts.
Arts A/v Technology & Communications
Creative students who see themselves designing, producing, exhibiting, performing, writing or publishing multimedia content will want to pursue courses in the Arts, A/V Technology and Communications Career Cluster.
You will apply artistic talent to practical problems and learn visual arts principles that prepare you with skills and techniques to work in any number of creative design and entertainment fields.
This career cluster is organized into six career pathways:

Do you like to perform in front of an audience? Are you a visual person or like to work with productions and technology?
Arts, audio/video technology, and communications workers use creativity and their talents on the job. You might work for an audience as a performer or artist. This includes painters, dancers, sculptors, actors, and singers. Or, you might work behind the scenes to make a performance successful. This includes set designers, editors, broadcast technicians, and camera operators.
Some audio/video technology and communications workers have high-profile jobs. For example, you might work as a news reporter or fashion designer. Or, you might use your creative talents with technology and work as an animator, graphic designer, or film editor.

Within this context, students will be expected to develop an understanding of the various and multifaceted career opportunities in this cluster and the knowledge, skills, and educational requirements for those opportunities.

Career & Technical Student Organizations
Career and technical student organizations are much more than clubs. They provide opportunities for hands-on learning, and for applying career, leadership and personal skills in real-world environments. Participants build their skills by developing projects, attending events, and competing regionally and nationally.

Audio Video Production Ii
Careers in audio and video technology and film production span all aspects of the audio/video communications industry. Building upon the concepts taught in Audio/Video Production, in addition to developing advanced knowledge and skills needed for success in the Arts, Audio/Video Technology, and Communications Career Cluster, students will be expected to develop an advanced understanding of the industry with a focus on pre-production, production, and post-production products. This course may be implemented in an audio format or a format with both audio and video.

Education After High School
It is fact that young people who have at least one year of post-high school education earn thousands of dollars more a year. So, if you spend even one year at a two- or four-year college, in a certificate program at a technical school, or in an apprenticeship after you graduate from high school, you will very likely earn higher wages all your life. By furthering your education, you will be better-prepared to successfully navigate the world of work.
After taking CTE classes in arts, A/V technology and communications, you could pursue any number of opportunities including:
- On-the-job education as an actor, artist, dancer, graphic designer, set designer or musician. These experiences can be started while you are still in high school
- A credential in graphic design
- A two-year degree in drama, music, art, radio or TV broadcasting
- A four-year degree in communications, graphic art composition, vocal performance drama/theater, education, art, or music, radio, TV or film production
Legal And Safety Considerations
- Training sponsors normally provide job-specific safety training. A good sponsor will be able to direct the teacher-coordinator and the student to appropriate resources for occupation-specific safety and legal considerations.
- Teacher coordinators are responsible for providing general safety instruction and for ensuring that all training takes place.
- Teachers may assign students to research and report on specific safety and legal considerations for their job or industry.
In Section 5, you learned about hazardous occupations listed in Child Labor Bulletin No. 101 , which you bookmarked. Some of the occupations related to this cluster will involve hazardous activities. For example, a student working for a printing company might be asked to operate a power-driven stapling machine, an envelope die-cutting press, or a paper cutter. Revisit WH-1330 as necessary to refresh your memory about hazardous occupations.
When coordinating a practicum, teachers should ask whether a student’s training station will require any special testing or permits prior to employment. For occupations in the AAVTC cluster, two of the most common requirements are:
- OSHA 10-hour training for general industry and
- signed parental consent allowing a minor student to appear in a video, broadcasts, or other types of visual or audio recordings.

Practicum Audio Video Production
Careers in audio/video production span all aspects of the audio/video communications industry. Building upon the concepts taught in Audio/Video Production II with Lab, in addition to developing advanced technical knowledge and skills needed for success in the Arts, Audio/Video Technology, and Communications Career Cluster, students will be expected to develop an increasing understanding of the industry with a focus on applying pre-production, production, and post-production audio and video products in a professional environment. This course may be implemented in an advanced audio/video or audio format. Instruction may be delivered through lab-based classroom experiences or career preparation opportunities.
Audio Video Production I
Careers in audio and video technology and film production span all aspects of the audio/video communications industry. Within this context, in addition to developing technical knowledge and skills needed for success in the Arts, Audio/Video Technology, and Communications Career Cluster, students will be expected to develop an understanding of the industry with a focus on pre-production, production, and post-production audio and video products.

Practicum Graphic Design And Illustration
Available at Austin HS, Burges HS, Coronado HS
The Digital Communications program of study explores the occupations and educational opportunities associated with the production of audio and visual media formats for various purposes, such as TV broadcasts, advertising, video production, or motion pictures. This program of study may also include exploration into operating machines and equipment to record sound and images, such as microphones, sound speakers, video screens, projectors, video monitors, sound and mixing boards, and related electronic equipment.
Successful completion of the Digital Communications program of study will fulfill requirements of the Business and Industry Endorsement.
Digital Communication In The 21st Century
Digital Communications in the 21st Century will prepare students for the societal demands of increased civic literacy, independent working environments, global awareness, and the mastery of a base set of analysis and communication skills. Students will be expected to design and present an effective product based on well-researched issues in order to thoughtfully propose suggested solutions to authoritative stakeholders. The outcome of the process and product approach is to provide students an authentic platform to demonstrate effective application of multimedia tools within the contexts of global communication and collaborative communities and appropriately share their voices to affect change that concerns their future. The six strands include creativity and innovation communication and collaboration research and information fluency critical thinking problem solving, and decision making digital citizenship and technology operations and concepts.

Printing Technology Career Path
Careers in this area deal with the creation of books, magazines, and newspapers from raw manuscript or electronic files to printed pages. The three main areas in this field are prepress , press , and postpress/binding . Careers in printing technology include desktop publishing specialists, graphic designers, prepress workers, and printing press operators.

Northern New York Community Foundation Scholarships
Since 1980, the Northern New York Community Foundation has awarded more than $18 million in scholarships to students from Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties.
The Community Foundation annually awards scholarships to:
- High school seniors for their freshman year in college or technical school. Full-time enrollment is required for a one-year award.
- High school juniors in St. Lawrence County who will plan to pursue careers in STEM-related fields are encouraged to apply for a one-year award.
- Nontraditional students for any year of college or vocational, trade and technical school are also available. Part-time or full-time enrollment is required, and applicants must live in Jefferson, Lewis or St. Lawrence county. Applicants may reapply each year.
Scholarships, which can average up to $2,000, are available from three programs the Community Foundation administers:
- Northern New York Community Foundation Scholarships Awarded to students in liberal arts.
- Herring College Memorial Scholarships Awarded to students in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and related fields.
- Visiting Nurse Association Scholarships Awarded to students in nursing and health-related fields.
The Community Foundation also stewards more than 300 restricted scholarships through funds that individual donors have established.
