Effective integration of technology through advising tools and resources serves to guide, expand and enhance student-centered advising. Advisors will be given an opportunity to learn how to integrate different types of technology into their advising techniques.

  • All full- and part-time Hudson Valley and EOC employees may participate at no cost except for materials, if needed.

    To earn a Certification of Completion, participants will complete a total of 18 training hours six from each of the key areas. Courses will be listed on the CPE Web page and will be offered regularly. Each course will have substantial content delivered in person, via the Web, or in a combination determined by the instructor. Participants who have completed the requirements for the Certification should notify the Center for Professional Excellence by sending an e-mail to . Those who earn a Certification of Completion will be recognized at the Faculty Honors Convocation.

    The Center for Professional Excellence will accept course proposals from potential instructors. Courses that meet professional development needs, as set forth by the CPE, will be included as part of the Certification program. Employees interested in developing courses are encouraged to submit a Workshop/Course Proposal.

    Overview:This training will provide an overview of the Veterans Degree plan initiative. We will cover different types of VA Educational benefits and the student requirements to ensure certification of each respective benefit, in addition to best practices for advising students using VA benefits.

    Adv 1: Academic Advising For International Students

    Overview: The purpose of this training is to provide guidance to the advising community on how to advise international students. Topics will include: Differences in higher education systems throughout the globe and the importance of explaining the purpose and value of a Liberal Arts education to international students measuring language preparation and language/writing placement based on test scores basic academic requirements for students to maintain visa status tips for building course schedules and strategies to assist students facing academic difficulty and other challenges that impact academic performance.

    Learning Outcomes:

    Participants will learn about the differences in higher education systems in countries where international students come from and the value of explaining and stressing the importance of a Liberal Arts education to international students.

    Why The Academic Advising Certificate

    Any student from any background who is seriously interested in becoming an academic advisor.

    Focus of the program is on advising emerging adults rather than just traditional 19-21 year olds. Emerging adults are the majority of the current college environment.

    There are few formal paths to training to be an academic advisor. This 12-hour certificate will prepare graduates for the job of academic advisor.

    ADV 100: Foundations of Academic Advising, part 1

    Overview: This training will provide a historical overview of academic advising in American higher education. Through an examination of relevant seminal literature and contemporary research, participants will explore the relationship between advising and student retention. Theoretical foundations of advising will be reviewed, focusing on student development theories. The training will provide an overview of the different advising approaches or strategies employed today. Participants will review the National Academic Advising Association’s Core Values of Academic Advising and the CAS Standards for Advising.

    Overview: This training will review UM academic policies and procedures and the various resources available to assist advisors in their work with students.     Uc Davis Academic Advisor Certificate Is Designed To Fit The Needs Of Advisors With Varying Amounts Of Experience And Knowledge

    Level One

    This certificate establishes a baseline of knowledge that includes an introduction to critical campus resources and technology, as well as content that covers fundamental advising concepts. Courses reflect conceptual, informational, and relational student advising competency areas, derived from NACADAs Advisor Training Competencies. While the Office of Academic Advising urges all advisors to complete this foundational coursework, it is particularly important information for advisors who are new to the profession or new to UC Davis. While the Level One certificate is not required, the Developing Deeper Advising Relationships series is a mandatory training workshop for ALL college and departmental advisors. To achieve certification at level one, you must complete four core courses, as well as one elective course within a recommended two-year timeframe.

    Academic advising is critical to student success at the University of Montana. The Office for Student Success, in collaboration with campus partners, is offering the Academic Advising Certificate Program to ensure the consistency and high quality of academic advising at UM and to provide professional development opportunities for individuals interested in academic advising.

    Through the training program, participants will learn about historical and theoretical foundations of advising, different approaches or strategies of academic advising today, UM-specific policies and procedures relevant to advising, various tools available to UM advisors, and support services and resources available to UM students. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to learn about specialized advising services for various diverse communities of students and other topics relevant to advising.

    These trainings provide great introductions to advising for faculty or staff members who do official or unofficial advising on a daily basis in their positions and need a refresher.
