Capital Area Career Center’s Lpn Program To Continue
An immediate threat to the future of the licensed practical nurse training program at the Capital Area Career Center has been removed.
The CACCs $347,000 in annual state funding was transferred in the new state budget from the Illinois State Board of Education to the Illinois Community College Board this spring, and a new affiliation agreement was worked out in late July.
For us, its the status quo, CACC director Bob Klingborg said last week.
The funding is important, but even more important is the programs continued affiliation with a state agency so students in the program can qualify for grants and loans, he said.
The affiliation also allows the program to remain accredited and enables its graduates to qualify for the national LPN certification exam, he said.
The background
The LPN program began in the Springfield School District 53 years ago and has been based at the center, 2201 Toronto Road, since the CACC opened 40 years ago. The CACC is owned by 12 Springfield-area school districts.
But center officials were notified by the state board in January 2011 that their funding would be eliminated after June 2012.
ISBE spokesman Matt Vanover said this spring that the plans to cut off funding for the Springfield LPN program and other adult education programs began after ISBE officials realized that funding for the programs should have been stopped after 2001, when ISBE began focusing solely on elementary and secondary education.

It is a pretty decent company to work for, The pay is decent. I enjoyed getting to learn something new every single day. Would definitely recommend.
The environment here is very misleading. The communication is terrible. Nothing is in writing. There is no teamwork. Teachers compete with other teachers. The only fun thing is working with the students.
