Career Development Center Director Search
Buffalo State College invites applications for its next director of the Career Development Center. The college is seeking a dynamic, creative, and well-rounded leader looking to take the next step in their career services experience. If you are ready to provide innovative leadership to a team of strong career development professionals and help advance the college’s urban-engaged mission along with national, regional, and local employers, this position is one that you should consider. The Career Development Center Director will assume office July 1, 2020.
Three candidates for the position of director of the Career Development Center will participate in virtual open forums on the following dates. The names of the candidates will be released two days before their scheduled visits, along with a Qualtrics link that Buffalo State community members may use to receive an invitation to the candidates sessions, which will be conducted via Zoom.
Each candidate will present on the topic of innovative approaches to career development that would specifically support the success of diverse, first-generation students at Buffalo State College to the campus community on the following days:
Suny Buffalo State Summer Bridge Program
SUNY Buffalo State College hosted 50 rising 10th grade students for our first Summer Bridge Program for 6 weeks during the summer of 2021. The goal of Summer Bridge is to expose students to college rigor and culture while they are in high school through on-campus experiences. Our Summer Bridge students utilized services on Buffalo States campus, participated in workshops around career development and college services, and earned 3 college credits!
What is Summer Bridge?Summer Bridge programs expose students to the college environment and coursework, while SIMULTANEOUSLY building foundational skills in reading and writing that students need to be college and career ready.
Applications for our next class of Summer Bridge students will be available in Spring 2022. Check back for updates and to complete an application!
Council For Exceptional Children Student Chapter
The Council for Exceptional Children is an international organization that promotes the education of students with disabilities and those with gifts/talents. Buffalo State’s CEC Student Chapter 117 provides members with professional development to stand out during field placements, student teaching and in future careers. Students engage in community volunteer activities and events such as Polar Plunge. CEC is very active and always looking for new members.

Are You Required To Do An Internship
At Buffalo State, some academic departments require their students to participate in an internship. Consult with your department’s internship coordinator to learn about specific requirements for your major, complete the appropriate registration procedures, and any forms required. The internship coordinator will also be able to assist you even if the internships is not required for your major.
Based on feedback from employers, we highly recommend completing an internship even if your academic department does not require it. Internships position you as a more competitive candidate for full-time jobs or graduate school.

The Career and Professional Education Center provides a full range of career counseling services to help students select a major, plan a career, apply to graduate school, and identify internship and employment opportunities. They also connect students with information about career options with Buffalo State majors. Assessment and exploration programs are available to assist in selecting a career well-suited to individual student interests, strengths, and other personal characteristics. In addition to hosting BengalLink, where students can find full-time, summer, and part-time jobs, as well as internship opportunities, the CAPE links students with employers and successful alumni through job fairs, on-campus interviews, and job-search programs.

The SBA offers recurring seminars and programs to support entrepreneurs at every stage of their business. Their ongoing programs include:
- Federal and state procurement training, one-on-one and classes and other events
- Library – The Buffalo Public Library has resources to help you. The library provides a free 30 minute orientation with a librarian to help you learn about what is available. Research an industry, start or expand a business, or explore a new career. The Buffalo Public Library features an extensive collection of business and career books, plus, and free Wi-Fi.
- SCORE – SCORE matches people with mentors who provide professional guidance and information to help existing small businesses grow, and new businesses get off the ground. The nonprofit is dedicated to teaching you how to start, grow and sustain your small business.

International Professional Development Schools
The School of Education’s International Professional Development Schools Consortium provides teacher candidates with experiences that prepare them to thrive as globally-minded educators who meet the needs of today’s children and classrooms. Current international collaborations have been developed in Chile, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Germany, Honduras, Italy, Rwanda, and Zambia.

Center For Excellence In Urban And Rural Education
The Center for Excellence in Urban and Rural Education was established to proactively meet the needs of disadvantaged students and their schools in urban and impacted rural areas. CEURE’s mission is to close the student achievement gap, revitalize impacted schools to facilitate teacher retention, and provide qualified, effective teachers for every classroom. CEURE has initiated ongoing efforts to shape culturally responsive education strategies that benefit students in Western New York’s city and rural schools.
Harris Talks About Vision For Buffalo States Career Development Center
Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the employment landscape has been shifting rapidly, and getting a foot in the door of the working world is harder than ever for new grads. According to Business Insider, 20- to 24-year-olds constituted just 26 percent of new hires in June 2021, a 33 percent drop from the pre-pandemic figure of 39 percent. The Class of 2021 is also vying with the Class of 2020, which graduated into an economy hobbled by the pandemic and a record-high unemployment rate of 14.7 percent.
Now more than ever, it is critical for applicants entering the job market to use all the tools and resources at their disposal. Luckily for Buffalo State College students and alumni, the Career Development Center is available to give them a leg up for all their professional needs, from résumé polishing to interview preparation. Response To Intervention Technical Assistance Center
The New York State Response to Intervention Technical Assistance Center is a consortium between Buffalo State, Rochester Institute of Technology, New York University, College of St. Rose, Syracuse University, and Mid-Hudson Region. It’s mission is to support capacity-building efforts of NYS schools to implement proven and promising practices within a Response to Intervention model. The Center compiles and disseminates information and resources and provides technical assistance and professional development to schools. .
Tips For Finding An Internship
- Identify what kind of internship you would like to complete. Not sure – talk to us!
- Develop a resume and cover letter to submit to potential internship sites. Many departments require students to complete CAPE Workshops as a prerequisite.
- Make an appointment with a career counselor or come to our Drop-in hours to have your resume and cover letter reviewed
- Utilize CAPE Resources
- Talk with Employers Visiting Campus about internships
- Check you academic department website for additional opportunities
- Contact employers you may be interested in working with directly and ask if they have internships
Many organizations accept intern applications throughout the year. If you have missed a deadline, apply now for next year, and ask to be considered if something opens up sooner. On average, employers begin recruiting interns 8 months prior to the start date, especially for paid summer internships.

Suny Buffalo State College Access Program
We currently have 4 dual enrollment courses at CSAT through Buffalo States College Access Program .
Step 1: Students apply to be enrolled at SUNY Buffalo State as a CAP student. This application must only be completed once, for the first dual enrollment course taken. Information on CAP and an application can be found here: SUNY Buffalo State CAP Information and Application
Step 2: Students register for each course individually in class through Microsoft forms.
Step 3: Grades are monitored, and all students in good academic standing after 1st semester are officially enrolled in courses. Commitment to CAP dual enrollment courses happens at this point.
Step 4: CSAT teachers submit final grades to SUNY Buffalo State and credits are awarded at the end of each school year.
At any point students have access to their official transcript for SUNY Buffalo State by requesting one.
Horace Mann Graduate Research Symposium
The Horace Mann Graduate Research Symposium provides an opportunity for graduate-level teacher candidates in the Exceptional Education Department to showcase their research projects and share effective practices with colleagues and community educators. It is held at the end of every spring and fall semester.

Woods Beals Endowed Chair In Urban Education
In 2002, Buffalo State received a $1 million gift from Eleanore Woods Beals, a 1950 graduate, and her husband, Vaughn Beals, which was used to establish the first endowed chair in the 130-year history of the institution. Jevon Hunter, has developed several iniatives as the endowed chair – Urban Youth Scholars, Student Research, Urban Teacher Collaborative, and Urban Education Speaker Series.
Professional Development Schools Consortium
The Professional Development School Consortium is a collaboration between Buffalo State and participating schools. College faculty, school administrators, and practicing teachers explore effective practices to cooperatively supervise preservice teachers and provide closer connections to classroom practice promote professional development for inservice teachers improve student learning and research the problems of educational practice.

Center For Innovation In Education
The Western New York Regional Center for Innovation in Clinically Rich Teacher Preparation through Professional Schools project is one of three SUNY Centers for Innovation in Education, which serves as a way of gathering university and P-12 faculty and administrators to work together to strengthen teacher and leader preparation by supporting current teachers and leaders as well as renewing practice for preparing new teachers and leaders.
