Career Change: The Questions You Need to Ask Yourself Now | Laura Sheehan | TEDxHanoi

If you already have bachelors and are hoping to make a career change into nursing doing one of these programs may be just the path for you. You wont have to waste time taking core courses such as history and English. Instead you can just jump right in and focus on the nursing specific courses. Another advantage of getting your BSN is that if you decide to further your career even more later and earn your PhD or become an advanced practice registered nurse , you will have the required degree to apply.

Take Advantage Of Opportunities To Gain Experience

Glynns final piece of advice is to take advantage of opportunities to build practical experience in the field. For instance, after completing their first clinical course, students can work as nursing assistants, which is a great way to build their skills and experience. This is also a great way to get your foot in the door for future employment.

Additionally, consider the ways your experience from your previous career can be applied to nursing.

For example, Elizabeth Landers, a former teacher and graduate of Regis accelerated BSN program found an intersection between her previous career in education and her new passion, for nursing. What I didnt anticipate was how closely nursing and education would align, and I found myself spending more and more time on patient education, Landers says. As soon as I started practicing nursing at the bedside, I realized how much of what nurses do is education.

Since becoming a nurse, Landers has further explored this intersection and has pursued a successful career in nursing education. Landers now serves as an Associate Professor of Nursing and the Director of the Accelerated BSN in Nursing Programs at Regis College.

Aside From Health Careers Where Should Those Seeking Reinvention Turn Their Focus

Clearly, hospitality and travel have been enormous drivers of the service economy. And unfortunately those industries are not positioned to recover soon enough to reabsorb all of the newly unemployed. Those who had successful careers in these sectors need to pivot toward Accelerated Career Change.

As the New York Times recently put it: The pandemic is almost sure to leave a mark on the way people work, shop and socialize, perhaps permanently shifting the way many service industries operate.

One example of where this can be seen is in delivery and logistics services. Online ordering has increased 56% YoY during March 22April 4, 2020. In an industry that was already short on drivers see Bloombergs report the increased demand is likely to have a positive effect on wages for those who answer the call.

Tech is not immune. Before the pandemic there was more demand for computer programmers than the supply could reasonably provide. While there are some questions about how access to Venture Capital will affect startups and their ability to hire for these positions, NASDAQ reported that 53% of VCs will still be investing in the same stages of companies as before the crisis. Their investments are predicted to be focused in industries such as healthcare, remote-work enablement, logistics, and productivity solutions.

Nursing As A Second Career

Accelerated Career Programs

Over the last 10-15 years, theres been a surge in individuals who had originally selected a different occupation, received a bachelors degree, and now come into nursing, says Dr. Donna Glynn, associate dean of nursing at Regis College. The reasons for this surge vary.

One of the main reasons people choose to pursue nursing as a second career is the promising job market. The nursing shortage is here, and the job market is huge, Glynn says.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for registered nurses is expected to grow 12 percent from 2018 to 2028, resulting in an estimated 371,500 new jobs. Additionally, those looking to enter the field of nursing can typically expect generous compensation. In 2018, registered nurses made an average salary of $71,730 per year, or $34.48 per hour.

Another factor that makes nursing appealing is the flexibility and variety that it offers.

Nurses can work in a variety of settingsacute care, home care, education, community healthand a variety of hours, Glynn says. Healthcare is 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Nurses can work flexible hours to make it work for their families.

But perhaps most of all, people tend to be drawn to nursing out of a desire to make a difference in the lives of others.

What Qualities Are Necessary To Succeed In An Accelerated Degree Program

You will typically have more success if you are self-motivated, especially if courses are online. You need to take initiative, work through assignments alone, and reach out with questions. These courses move quickly, so if you have trouble understanding a certain concept, itâs important to contact your professor.

A strong sense of commitment is important too since accelerated programs have minimal breaks in between classes. â

How Can Americans Plan For Whats Next

My hypothesis: we are entering a radically different era, which demands what I am calling Accelerated Career Change.

The need for Accelerated Career Change and the ecosystem that supports it has been growing over the last decade. This crisis has only exasperated the reality. Programs that can offer expedited upskilling and reskilling must emerge as the new normal for educational models. From micro-credentials to bootcamps coding, sales, and others our economy demands targeted skill programs that will allow people to own their next career. Indeed, the ultimate question of which careers those in transition should pursue is an existential one for individuals, their families, and the American economy.

For example, it is intuitive that healthcare should continue to be a robust sector. Should the newly unemployed look there? Perhaps it represents a vast 11 percent of the American economy. In addition to the health careers that always come to mind , there are many others that can require less of a commitment and offer credentials in a matter of months with a targeted, accelerated training program like EKG technician, medical assistant, and surgical technologist.

Every expert predicts telehealth will explode. Will that create the need for more nurses and clinicians, with specific expertise in the remote delivery of medicine? It may be too soon to tell, but there will certainly be new careers born from this crisis.
